YOUTH AND ELDERS UNITE IN HEARTFELT YOUTH DAY

June 2025.

In celebration of Youth Day 2025, thirteen young learners from Namaqualand area, currently enrolled in a local Project Management Learnership programme, visited a local old-age home in Bergsig. Supported by Kangnas Wind Farm, this visit was designed to bridge the gap between generations, fostering connection, compassion, and community between the youth and elders.

Through storytelling, games, group activities, and small acts of kindness, the youth engaged meaningfully with the Huis Immanuel residents, encouraging mutual respect and learning.

“Youth Day is more than just remembering the Soweto Uprising, it’s a reminder that the future rests on the shoulders of our youth. It also shows that we shouldn’t move forward by forgetting those who walked before us. There’s power in keeping our elders part of the journey. They hold the stories, the lessons, and the resilience we need to build a stronger future,” explained Rouchet Daniels, Economic Development Manager for Kangnas Wind Farm.

The day’s programme included a motivational speech from a local motivational speaker, games, gift exchanges, makeovers for the ladies, and even a special crochet demonstration by Grandma Elizabeth, a resident who repurposes plastic into handmade hats and baskets.

More than a visit, this initiative served as a practical extension of the wind farm’s commitment to youth empowerment. By engaging in this experience, the learners strengthened their soft skills, such as teamwork, communication, and emotional intelligence, while also deepening their understanding of active citizenship.

“Youth Day at the old age home was really special. Spending time with the elderly, listening to their stories and seeing them smile made me realise how important it is to give back and show kindness. It was fun, emotional, and something I’ll never forget,” said Danea Cloete, a learner.
